How to Reach Prayagraj

By Air

Prayagraj has its own airport - Bamrauli Airport (IXD), with regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other major cities. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use prepaid cab services to reach the Kumbh Mela area.

By Train

Prayagraj Junction is a major railway station well-connected to all parts of India. Direct trains are available from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and other cities. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available outside the station.

By Road

Prayagraj is well-connected by national highways. Regular bus services operate from Lucknow (200 km), Varanasi (125 km), and other cities. Private cars and taxis can also be hired for comfortable travel.

Where to Stay

Hotels

Book hotels in Civil Lines, MG Marg, or near the railway station for comfortable stays with modern amenities. During Kumbh, premium camps are also set up with luxury facilities.

Dharamshalas

Budget-friendly dharamshalas (pilgrim rest houses) are available throughout the city. Many ashrams also offer accommodation for pilgrims.

Tent Cities

During Kumbh Mela, the government sets up elaborate tent cities with various categories - from basic to luxury Swiss tents with attached bathrooms and hot water facilities.

Carry comfortable cotton clothes, warm layers (for January-February), comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Don't forget your ID proof!

For Holy Bath

Pack extra sets of dry clothes, towels, waterproof bags for wet clothes, and a change of footwear. Women should carry a saree or simple cotton clothes for bathing.

Safety Tips

Stay Together

Always stay with your group and designate a meeting point in case of separation. The crowd can be overwhelming, especially during Shahi Snan days.

Valuables

Keep minimal cash and valuables. Use money belts or secure inner pockets. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. Keep digital copies of important documents.

Health Precautions

Drink only bottled or purified water. Eat at hygienic places. Stay hydrated and take rest when needed. Be careful while bathing in the river.

Best Time to Visit

Shahi Snan Days

The most auspicious days are Makar Sankranti (Jan 14), Mauni Amavasya (Jan 29), and Basant Panchami (Feb 3). These days see the largest gatherings.

Weekdays

For a less crowded experience, visit on regular weekdays. Early mornings are ideal for holy bath and darshan with fewer crowds.

Weather

January-February can be cold with temperatures around 5-20ยฐC. Foggy mornings are common. The weather is pleasant for walking and exploration during the day.

Local Tips

Transportation

Use the free shuttle services and pontoon bridges set up during Kumbh. E-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are common. Book boat rides in advance for Sangam darshan.

Food

Try local delicacies like kachori-sabzi, jalebi, and chai. Many ashrams and langars offer free meals (prasad) to pilgrims. Avoid eating raw vegetables and unpeeled fruits.

Communication

Network congestion is common during peak days. Download offline maps. Share your location with family. Note down emergency helpline numbers.
